We all agree that to have an impact, we need a strong message, we need to stand out by what we say. And sometimes, this means crossing “our” line! I’m not saying that you need to cross the boundaries of politeness and good manners, I’m talking about the limit we impose on ourselves using the excuse that we don’t want to offend people who think differently from us!
We CANNOT please everybody, just as much as we CANNOT serve everybody. That being said, you are left in a field wide open with possibilities. What do you strongly believe in? What do you stand up for? What are your deeply held opinions?
Do you know what they are – YES? Then shoot them to the world…speak up and make a lot of noise about it.
Of course, some people may disagree with you, but so what? Even a negative comment brings value to the conversation. It may open your eyes to an angle you hadn’t considered until now. It may reinforce the bond you created with people who do agree with you. Or, and this happened to me, your biggest opponent may become a client and turn out to be your best advocate.
Many great business owners shy away from what they really believe in and, because of that, they don’t attract their ideal clients, the ones that would say ‘I want to work with you, tell me how’. Instead they are a magnet for indecisive clients, people who don’t know exactly what they want….
If you have difficulties calling a spade a spade, usually it’s because your thoughts are lost around the “What if…..”. What if somebody reacts negatively? What if people unsubscribe? What if people ‘unfriend’ me?
It takes courage to run a successful business….and it takes courage to assume who you really are.
Now, as much as we are all essentially unique, it would be really pretentious to believe that we are the only one thinking what we think. So, here are a few things you can start doing today:
1. Modify your “what if” scenario
Whenever you are fearful of other people’s feedback, change your world and start saying this: “What if people start liking me because what I say resonates with them? What if people start reading my newsletters because I say out loud what they believe in their heart? What if people start calling me because they feel I’m real and honest? What if people start hiring me because I walk the talk!
2. Run a few “honesty” tests
If you use social media, try to identify 2 to 3 people who are not afraid of sharing what they believe in even if it means “pissing off” a few people along the way. See how they speak, how they present their strong message. Can you model their approach? If not, how could you slightly modify it so your message doesn’t get diluted again?
3. Find a few extreme examples
Whether you like her or not, the best example for me is Lady Gaga. I like to say that in every woman there is a Madonna or a Lady Gaga waiting to emerge. Who is yours? How far would you go? What do you like about the way these women drive their life? Even if you don’t really like them, there is a lot to model on right there.
4. Surround yourself with fans
Don’t be scared to connect with people who serve the same crowd as you do while addressing a different angle. Share your views on their Facebook wall, invite them to yours…get a community and a conversation going.
5. Get help!
I know this one crops up very often, but hey…am I not talking about saying out loud what you strongly believe in? And that’s my core belief, Success is built with others….we cannot do it alone and this holds true from the first day you are in business. No need to struggle to identify how you can communicate your belief…it’s just a waste of your valuable time, energy and, most likely, money. Get help right away so you shorten the cycle, you speed up the momentum, you get a strong shoulder to rely on AND a fan that will always support you. Because your Coach will always be your first fan!
6. Allow for support
Not only will you need a coach to ensure your message gets out in the right way and as powerfully as possible, you’ll also need somebody to help you implement the different strategies to carry that message to the world. Besides the obvious benefit of having somebody to take care of the ‘how’ for you, there is another benefit which is so often overlooked; the power of self-confidence. When you have only one person to help you transform your ideas into reality, you feel in control, you feel heard and understood. Because, of course, that person does believe in you, in what you do and shares your views on your business. If that’s not the case for you, maybe it’s time to hire somebody else?
What have you been trying to hide so much that you are now lost among the millions of other ‘generic’ businesses?
What is your heart crying out that you try not to listen to?
Don’t be shy and start sharing it with me in the comment section…you’ll feel better…it’s my promise!
